Tree project

Week twenty seven

And the rot sets in…

Also, it’s not possums in the tree, it’s fruit bats. Or it could both and they’re slugging it out to see who gets the last of the fruit. Regardless, I still wish they’d shut the hell up!!

Tree project

Week twenty six

Okay, so now it’s been half a year since I first picked up my camera and aimed it at a branch on the fig tree that overhangs my tiny back yard. To be honest, I was sure I’d get bored of it and stop after a few weeks in but it has been interesting to record what been happening with the tree. The last photo will be taken when the tree is bare.

In the meantime, my new photography project – 52 weeks is coming along. But I do wonder why I set myself such long time lines to complete something. Maybe this will be the one I get bored with.

Aaaaand… stats from today’s ride. It was my first go at the RRR (Ringwood Road Ride) and it turned out to be a lot of fun. The climb up the 1:20 was hard though. Still managed to shave 10 seconds off my first time so I suppose that makes it a PB for me. Hooray?

Week twenty five

Wow, I’ve been at this for nearly half a year. That’s a long time. Once I’m done I’m going to whack all the photos into flash and do a time-lapse thing with them. Don’t think it’ll last very long thought. Maybe a minute if I’m lucky.

Week twenty four

I had to admit I’m going to be glad when all the fruit is gone. I’m getting mighty sick of midnight visits from possums gorging themselves on it and making a racket outside my bedroom window.

It’s starting to cool down here, not that we really had a summer. There were only a few days over 35°C and only two days over 40°C. Normally I’d be sleeping with a sheet and a couple of blankets for about another month but I’m already curling up under my doona. I had to break out the 3/4 length knicks for this morning’s quick spin on Yarra Boulevard. The cold air was a bit harsh on my lungs too.

What I that I learnt from my physio yesterday…

Fun fact #1: estrogen affects soft tissue. I didn’t know this but certainly explains a lot about what’s been going on with my back in the last few months. The pain has been cyclical in nature, getting bad for a couple of days then receding. Some months it has been really bad, others it’s just a twinge. Not exactly sure what can be done about that. Still, knowing what’s going on is helpful. At least I know I’m not imagining it.

Fun fact #2: women are more likely to tear their anterior cruciate ligament when they’re ovulating. All I can say to that is: *shudders as I rub my knees*

52 weeks

Presenting…

52 weeks, my latest effort to do something creative.

My phone (HTC Desire HD) has a nifty retro camera app made by Urbian, Inc, which I downloaded for free from the Android marketplace. Like the title of the journal entry says, I’m going to attempt to post a photo that I’ve taken with my phone on deviantART each week til I hit week 52. Here’s hoping I can stick to it!!

The cameras in the app are (taken from Urbian’s website):

  • The Bärbl – An East German classic, naturally faded with a scratched film and medium vignetting, the perfect all-round choice.
  • The Little Orange Box – The Soviet Staple with aggressive cross processing and scratched square film. It’s crappy plastic lens leaks in light and exhibits strong vignetting. Black and white option for even more emotion.
  • Xolaroid 2000 – Its inspiration is obvious! We love the candid snapshots this camera produces – you simply can’t fail, every shot is a keeper. Blue/green cross processing effects and timeless contrast. Black and white option for that classic touch.
  • The Pinhole Camera – A DIY gem and more unpredictable than Schrödinger’s cat. Full bleed developing and vignetting through the roof, be sure to give this cardboard chimera a go.
  • The FudgeCan – The perfect rig for outdoors; developed on square film that wasn’t quite stored… or developed right. But therein lies the charm that’ll make your pics with this beauty, memorable and instantly nostalgic.

Week twenty three

So yeah… that plan to ride up Mount Donna Buang? Didn’t exactly come together because Mother Nature had other ideas.

The view from the observation tower at the top…

I’m sure there are some trees out there somewhere.

It started raining about 7pm last night and didn’t stop until around lunchtime today. We decided to drive up to the top anyway as two of us hadn’t seen the climb. About two-thirds of the way up, we drove into low cloud and that was it. We decided to climb up the observation tower anyway. It was about half way up that I discovered I have an issue with heights. I’ve never really had a problem with heights but today I got about half way up and my legs turned to jelly. I think the problem was that I could see through the stairs and there was nothing to look at, just solid white. I had no horizon reference. Not a pleasant sensation.

It would be a great ride, just not today.

Still, had a nice breakfast with pleasant company so that’s a win in my books 🙂
